Design - Set and Prop Design

This program offers a dynamic learning environment, with real-life projects that prepare the student to enter the job market.


Course Objectives

The aim of the program is to:

train students to properly carry out the tasks and activities that are an integral part of the Prop and Set design trade whether it be for product displays, promotional stands, display units, special events, or television, theatre, or movie sets;
complete documentary research prior to the elaboration of a project;
draw sketches that enable the student to choose the appropriate colours and materials;
create a visual set while taking into consideration the productions’ characteristics, the director’s intentions and the budgetary and technical constraints.

Recommended Student Profile

This program was developed specifically for those who satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

have already been to college and/or University and wish to reorient their career or to improve their knowledge of set design;
have work experience in unrelated fields, and wish to change careers;
already have arts-oriented work experience, but wish to diversify.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for admission into a program leading to an Attestation of Collegial Studies, you must have an education considered sufficient by the College and you must satisfy at least one of the following criteria:

having interrupted studies for at least two consecutive semesters or one full school year
benefit from a government program or an agreement between LaSalle College and your employer
having completed at least one year of postsecondary studies over a one-year period or longer

Career Possibilities

Students will have numerous possibilities in the construction of sets and props for product displays, promotional stands, display units. special events, or television, theatre, or movie sets. Other career possibilities include: assistant set designer, assistant decorator, model maker and trade person in decor or prop workshops.

Diploma

Attestation of College Studies.

Program Length

One year (three 15-week semesters) for a total of 1035 hours.

Groups

Maximum of 18 students per group.

Workshop and Classroom Hours

All workshops and classrooms are available to you with written authorization from your program coordinator.

Required Materials

On the first day of class, your professor will give you a detailed list of materials required for your course. Students are strongly advised to wait until the course begins before buying their material. Professors may have particular product specifications and may be able to direct you to the best purchases.
